The new Blue Book: Smart sustainable coastal cities and ‘blue’ development strategies for the marine environment and shipping offers a comprehensive approach to tackle global challenges of sustainability and public health, particularly in coastal regions and marine ecosystems.

HS4U’s diverse work is featured in 6 chapters written by our consortium partners and explains further solutions that are sought in detection, management, and mitigation by engineering and information systems, and for the design of the ship itself.

As our pilot activities leader, Stamatina Rassia mentions IT plays an ever-increasing role in the proposed solutions. Disease detectors are discussed at length, and it may be surprising for the uninitiated to learn that a passenger’s risk of having COVID can be detected by analyzing an audio file in their cabin, their sneezing and coughing habits. Other sensors even invade the toilet, but it is reassuring to know that it will be “heard” by the AI and not the doctor.

HS4U advances the field and offers a bottom-up evidence approach extending current standardised design and regulatory paradigms toward the shipping industry while promoting principles of modularisation and optimisation.
