SAFARI and HS4U are sister projects and share the same vision, to promote sustainable and safe practices in the EU maritime transport sector!
European ports are crucial in facilitating international trade, connecting regions, and contributing to economic growth and development. However, they are exposed to multiple risks and vulnerabilities that can impact their operations, functionality, and efficiency.
The SAFARI project aims to develop a versatile digital platform to enhance port infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events. This platform will connect large port communities by establishing strong communication channels between port stakeholders and infrastructures. It will be equipped with emergency management modules, supported by operational, maintenance, and analytical components. The SAFARI objectives are presented below:
Objectives of SAFARI
- Maintain Port Operations
Ensure that port operations continue at 80% capacity during disruption periods.
- Optimise Transport Assets
Optimise transport assets for a 20% cargo shift, reduced environmental impact, and minimised downtime during extreme weather
- Enhance Resilience Measures
Strengthen existing port infrastructure against extreme weather events.
- Ensure Safety and Biodiversity
Guarantee the safety of personnel and vessels while protecting biodiversity.
- Develop a Governance Model
Build a governance model and guidelines to address climate risks and hazards for port infrastructure.
HS4U and SAFARI intersect on several key objectives, notably their dedication to advancing health, safety, and resilience within maritime and port ecosystems. While HS4U primarily focuses on improved health management aboard large passenger ships, SAFARI concentrates on ensuring safe and efficient port operations during adverse conditions. Despite their distinct operational focuses— maritime health on the one hand, and sustainable, safe port infrastructure on the other —the two projects converge in their commitment to resilience. Both projects prioritise digital innovation, stakeholder engagement, robust safety protocols, and data-driven methodologies to create safer, more sustainable and resilient maritime and port environments.
